Do Canon Cameras Come With A Memory Card?

There is nothing as exciting as getting a new Canon camera, especially if it is your first camera.

You’ve more than likely been looking around to see what options you have, and you might also have seen all the accessories that you can get for your camera as well.

While it is an exciting time, it can be a bit overwhelming as well and this is sure to raise a few questions.

When buying a Canon camera, many people are asking whether or not it comes with a memory card.

I’ve bought quite a few Canon cameras in my time, so join me as I discuss this topic.

Do Canon Cameras Come With A Memory Card? No, Canon cameras are not sold with a memory card included, so to effectively use your camera and have it save the photos that you take, you will need to purchase a memory card separately.

What Memory Card Do You Need For A Canon Camera?

Ok, so now that we’ve established that you need to buy a memory card separately, let’s have a look and the type of memory card that you need to get.

An SD (Secure Digital) memory card will work with most modern cameras, and SD cards have various capacity and speed configurations. Depending on what you want to do with your camera, you would need to buy an SD card with a certain capacity and write speed.

First, if you plan to just casually take photos then a 32GB SD card will do the trick. However, if you want to take videos as well then I recommend that you opt for a 64GB or 128GB instead.

Avoid the smaller 8GB SD cards because they can fill up pretty quickly especially if you shoot in RAW.

Now, let’s move on to the speed configuration of the SD card. SD cards have a class rating, and this indicates the read and write speed of the SD card. For the most part, you should only be concerned about the write speed which refers to how quickly the SD card can save data received from the camera.

A Class 2 SD card can write at a speed of 2MB/sec, a Class 4 SD card can write at a speed of 4MB/sec, and the highest class SD card, Class 10, can write at a speed of 10MB/sec.

Even though a Class 4 SD card will do fine in most cases, I recommend that you opt for the Class 10 option instead. A Class 10 SD card can easily save large amounts of data in quick succession, so you will be covered for taking bursts of high-quality photos and videos as well.

It is worth noting that you don’t need to buy a memory card specifically made for a Canon camera. As long as your Canon camera supports an SD card, then you can buy any brand of SD card.

How Much Does A Memory Card Cost For A Canon Camera?

As mentioned, SD cards have various capacity and speed configurations, and each configuration will go for a different price. The higher the capacity, and the higher the speed, the higher the price.

For example, a Class 10 32GB SD card will cost you around $10, depending on the brand. And a Class 10 64GB SD card will cost slightly more, coming in at around $11.30.

Can I Use My Canon Camera Without A Memory Card?

While you can technically operate your Canon camera without a memory card, you will only be able to browse the camera menu. You won’t be able to take any photos and save them for future use.

So, as you can see, it is vital that you get a memory card to fully enjoy your Canon camera.

Conclusion

As you can see, you don’t get a memory card included when you buy a new Canon camera. It is up to you to buy it separately.

The type of memory card that you need to buy will depend on what you want to use the camera for. For normal photo sessions, a 32GB SD card will do the trick. For video, however, you should rather go for a 64GB or 128GB memory card.

As mentioned earlier, an SD card has a class rating and this refers to the speed at which it can read or write data. The faster it can write data, the better. If your budget allows for it, then go for the Class 10 option.
